Scott Hutchison received a M.F.A in painting from George Washington University, and currently teaches drawing at George Washington University, and Painting at The Art League School in Alexandrian VA.

As an emerging artist, Scott has received individual artist painting grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the D.C. Commission for the Arts and Humanities, as well as the Morris Lewis Fellowship in Painting.

A retrospective of Hutchison's work was rescently displayed at George Mason University, and Scott has been in a number of other solo shows including the Fraser gallery in Washington DC, the Dumbarton Chapel gallery in Georgetown, and The Charles County Community College Fine Arts Center in Laplata Maryland.

Scott recently had a four-page spread published in a new contemporary arts magazine called The Resolution of Neurosis.

Artist Statement

The metallic figures, shapes and forms I paint are imagined creations. The human figures are found entrapped, dismembered, or beautified by the weight of the steel-like structures painted around them. Through dramatic dark and light contrasts, each work is given a sense of mystery and drama. Machines and humans are working symbiotically, while remaining separate entities. The figure and machinery work together to form complex patterns of soft curving flesh and hard edged steel.

These private interior landscapes contain an internal battle between the real and the fantastically unreal. An otherworldly region unfolds onto a stage of human existence dependant on technology.

It is my purpose (as the artist) to let the imagination dominate the work. Through content, I seek out strange psychological juxtapositions in order to challenge the viewer. For me, the act of painting is similar to having a dream; the haunting images I create have many interpretations and are universal in scope. There are no right or wrong answers, and each of the contrasting reactions I receive is equally valid.
